Introduce passkeys without overlooking account recovery
Passkeys use cryptographic authentication rather than ordinary password entry. A successful introduction also needs enrolment, new-device, recovery and support journeys.
In this guide
- Explain the change clearly
- Protect enrolment
- Plan device changes and lost access
- Retain permissions and session controls
- Test and roll out progressively
Explain the change clearly
Passkeys use an authenticator and available unlocking mechanism. Experience depends on operating system, browser and credential manager, so verify target environments.
The sign-in method does not resolve shared-device sessions, role changes or inappropriate data access. Those remain application responsibilities.
Protect enrolment
Explain when a passkey can be created and how success or failure is shown. Avoid excessive technical messages during ordinary sign-in.
Associate enrolment with the correct account and suitable identity verification. Adding a new access method is a consequential account operation.
Plan device changes and lost access
Test losing a device or changing phones. Define genuine recovery options and support responsibilities without weakening the account boundary.
Synchronisation and availability differ across environments. Do not assume every passkey automatically appears on every device.
Retain permissions and session controls
Authentication and authorisation are separate. A new sign-in method must not grant broader record or administration access.
Define method revocation, session handling and staff-departure behaviour where applicable, with understandable information for users and support.
Test and roll out progressively
Use representative browsers and devices for enrolment, return, refusal, cancellation and recovery. Include keyboard navigation and readable messages.
Monitor failures and assistance requests through a staged release. Custom integration can preserve the account journey while adding the new capability.
Your checklist
- Define supported environments.
- Protect enrolment.
- Plan recovery and device changes.
- Separate authentication and permissions.
- Test exceptions and support procedures.
Frequently asked questions
Do passkeys eliminate all security risks?
No. Sessions, permissions, recovery and devices still need appropriate controls.
Can an existing app add passkeys?
Yes, when the account architecture and target environments support it. Define the migration and recovery paths.
